about
Dazarola.com is an independent research project on the history and genealogy of the Dazarola and Dazzarola families, from their Basque origins to their arrival and development in Chile.
Who is behind it
I am Williams Dazarola Obreque, a Chilean engineer and descendant of this family. I began this research to answer a simple question: where does our surname come from? Over the years, it has grown into a documentary archive that spans from ancestral homes in Gipuzkoa to Chilean records from the early 20th century.
I also manage the family’s Facebook group, where more than 150 people participate, sharing photos, memories, and information.
What you’ll find here
- History: The origin of the Azarola lineage in Gipuzkoa, its passage to the French Basque Country as Dazarola and the migration to America in 1845-1847.
- People: Biographies of family members who left their mark on architecture, medicine, science, art, and public service.
- Works: buildings and works carried out by members of the family, several of them now protected heritage in ValparaÃso.
- Investigation: Articles on archival documents, transcripts, and findings.
How I research
I work with primary sources: parish and civil records in Spanish, French, Basque, and Latin; 17th-century court records; notarial and mining records from the National Archives of Chile; passenger lists; and 19th-century newspapers. Among the collections consulted are the Historical Archive of the Sanctuary of Loyola, the National Archives of Chile, and FamilySearch.
I follow three rules:
- I cite the source of every important piece of information.
- I distinguish what is documented from what is oral tradition or hypothesis.
- I publicly correct when a new document changes a conclusion.
Family Privacy
I only publish detailed information about deceased individuals or those whose information is in the public domain. Living individuals appear only with their consent. If you are a family member and wish to correct, add, or remove information, please contact me.
How to collaborate
If you have any photos, documents, letters, or mementos of the Dazarola or Dazzarola family, I would love to hear about them. Each contribution will be published with the credit you prefer.
